DECEMBER SHOW AND CLASSES
Art Walk is Friday, December 7, 6:30 - 10:00, but the show will be up all month.

(Classes page is not working, so please scroll down this page for class schedule. Thanks!)

LITTLE WORLDS

Mixed media works by Blynn Cadoo, Bonny Stone, and Bobbysox Einstein—playful pieces involving paint, pastels, ink, numbers and text, and collage.

Incredibly charming illustrations and ceramics by Genevra Daley Bell, whose work includes elements like dancing bears and animals in suits.

New ceramics by Mara Winningham add to her already marvelous collection, and a variety of plates by Kasie Clemmons make for a lot of choices for any lover of unique dishes.

Drawings and ceramics by Donna Colby, both combining geometric forms with a kind of stage set structure.

New paintings, collages, and other work by the Flying Leap artists are also part of the show.

CLASS SCHEDULE FOR DECEMBER 2012

These are adult classes (ages 17 and up). All classes are suitable for both beginners and those with art experience. Materials are provided. No preregistration necessary for any of the scheduled classes.

SATURDAY MORNINGS 10:30 - 12:00
Saturday Creativity Session - $10
(only $5 for Flying Leap Art Club members)
This class will be varied and will often be based on requests from Flying Leap Art Club members. Here are the projects for this month:

December 1 - Using Mixed Media to Create a Cubist Still Life - In this class we will look at fascinating still life compositions by Georges Braque, with their multiple perspectives and layerings. Then we will experiment with our own works using a combination of collage, cut paper, paint, colored pencil, or other media.

December 8 -  How to Use Wax Resist to Create Designs - Continuing our once-a-month “How To” Saturday, we will focus this week on the technique of wax resist, in which clear wax, such as a white candle, or colored wax crayons are used to draw a pattern. Paint is then applied, which will be resisted by the waxed areas. Varied textures can be created by different ways of using the wax implements and the paint.

December 15 - Drawing or Painting Fantasy Animals - In this class, we will take our inspirations from Alexander Calder and Paul Klee, who each had their own ways to depict stylized or completely fanciful animals, all with a sense of presence and personality. Based on knowledge of the forms of actual animals, certain characteristics are exaggerated, elongated, emphasized or otherwise altered, while staying true to the essentials that make the fantasy animal seem real.

December 22 - Variations on Self Portraits - This class lets you express your own essential nature in a self portrait that can be an abstract design, a cartoon character, a color study, a mythic figure, an archetype, or even a realistic drawing, if you so desire. We will look at a variety of kinds of self portraits and see how much range there is in this age-old genre.

December 29 - Archetype of the Year - It’s almost the New Year and, in this class, we will visually portray what, for us, has been the archetypal quality that has dominated 2012 or, if you prefer, that you hope will represent 2013. We will create our own mythological figures or hero of the year’s narrative.

SATURDAY AFTERNOONS 1:30 - 3:00
Self Discovery Collage Workshop   $10
($8 for Flying Leap Art Club members)
Aimed at self-exploration. Anyone can do it. Each class has a theme and the abundant collage materials are used to work in an art journal, poster board, or any other format. There is a wonderful feeling in the room and great fascination at the end to see the incredible variety in the results. This is a very popular class.

SATURDAY AFTERNOONS 3:15 - 5:00
Working with the Masters
$18 individually or $60 for a 4-class punch card  ($12 a class for Flying Leap Art Club members)
A painting class based on observation and knowledge of the works of great master artists. Suitable for both beginners and experienced artists. Students create their own works, based on inspiration from the artist studied. Gouache and watercolor are primarily used, but pastels, acrylic, and other media come into play if appropriate, This class is full of wonderful discoveries, as well as naturally developing technique.

Each month or two a particular master artist is the focus:

December - The Beauty of Japanese Prints - This month we will look at all the qualities of Japanese art that so greatly inspired the modern artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when they discovered Japanese prints—unusual perspectives, flat areas of color, inventive and beautiful ways to draw the viewer to the focal point of the composition, and a love of portraying weather, such as rain and snow, the four seasons, and different times of day and night. Using these principles in our own work will be a wonderful adventure.

TUESDAY CLASS  1:30 - 3:00
Basic Drawing & Painting
$18 individually or $60 for a 4-class punch card  ($12 a class for Flying Leap Art Club members)
Formerly called "The Timid Artist," this class is for beginners or those who want to refresh the basic skills of drawing and painting. Each student gets individual attention and a curriculum based on interest and natural pace. Included are figure drawing, forms in nature, buildings and landscapes, composition, color palettes, and exploration of various drawing and painting media.

WEDNESDAY CLASS  1:30 - 3:00
Self Discovery Collage Class   $10
($8 for Flying Leap Art Club members)
A repeat of the Saturday 1:30 class.

THURSDAY AFTERNOON:

Thursday afternoon is designated as Studio Day for members of the Flying Leap Art Club or Art Collective, with the classroom available for those who want to work of any project of their own or get together for collaborative work.

FRIDAY CLASS  1:30 - 3:00
The Joy of Writing - $10
($8 for Flying Leap Art Club members)
Words are a wonderful art form, and one of the very best ways to become a good writer is to read great writing. In this class, each session begins with readings from exceptional writing of a particular author, genre, culture or era of literature and then focusing on what makes it great. There will then be an opportunity to do writing exercises to practice those elements. Members of the class will also be able to read to the group from their own writings if they desire. This is an ongoing class that you can join at any time.

All classes are taught by Donna Colby, owner and director of Flying Leap Art Space. She studied drawing with Robert Vickers at Ohio Wesleyan University (1964-66), attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City (1966-67), and majored in painting and Illustration at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design - 1967-69).  NOVEMBER SHOW AND CLASSES

(the classes page isn't working, so please scroll down for the November classes) Thanks!!)

IN-BETWEEN TURNAROUND

The Little Worlds of Blynn Cadoo, Bonny Stone, and Bobbysox Einstein - These are small works in a variety of media, each creating an intriguing atmosphere. Some are works entirely using text as design elements. Others have mathematical equations as the stimulus for the work. Some are bright works made of recycled bits of dismantled art pieces combined with various new materials. All the works inspire close exploration of their little details.

Genevra Daley Bell's delightful ceramics
should not be missed! Bowls and pots in beautiful natural earthenware are illustrated with white line drawings of bears, some dancing, all quite charming.

New artisan creations arriving throughout the month - ceramics, jewelry, hand-knit hats, and more.

CLASS SCHEDULE FOR NOVEMBER 2012
These are adult classes (ages 17 and up). All classes are suitable for both beginners and those with art experience. Materials are provided. No preregistration necessary for any of the scheduled classes.

SATURDAY MORNINGS 10:30 - 12:00
Saturday Creativity Session - $10  (only $5 for Flying Leap Art Club members)
This class will be varied and will often be based on requests from Flying Leap Art Club members. Here are the projects for this month:

November 3 - The Many Characteristics of Line -
In this class we will look at a great variety of kinds of lines used by artists throughout the centuries. Lines are very expressive and there is an enormous range of ways to make them in a work of art. We will use different line-producing tools and media and types of drawing to explore this range.

November 10 -  How to Depict Volume in a Form -
Continuing our our once-a-month “How To” Saturday, we will focus this week on creating the illusion of volume in a two-dimensional work of art. Using pencil and paint, we will study and explore the different ways to depict volumetric forms throughout shading and angles.

November 17 - Creating a Still Life with Volume -
In this class, we will continue looking at volume by noticing the ways artists have created a still life composition in which a group of volumetric forms are pictured together. In our own work, we will explore these principles of overlap, shadows, highlights, and more.

November 24 - Giving Thanks for Art -
This class, falling two days after Thanksgiving, will be a celebration of what we love best about art. We will look at the many gifts artists through the ages have provided to the world, and our own project today will reflect our own appreciation and gratitude for those elements of art we love best.

SATURDAY AFTERNOONS 1:30 - 3:00

Each month or two a particular master artist is the focus:

November - The Richness of Cézanne -
This month we will continue looking at the luminous, moving, complexity of the great master Paul Cézanne. Often called the Father of Modern Art, his determined and careful exploration of color, tone, spacial relationships, and perspective brought about innovations that pulled the rug out from under traditional assumptions about art. He worked slowly and with intense perseverance, and the results are some of the most mysteriously compelling works of art in existence. We will spend the month, and maybe next month as well, allowing Cézanne’s mastery to inspire and inform our own work.

October Show & Classes

The Art of the School room continues with works inspired by the graphics of classroom walls, like this Mexican school chart from the 1940s. The art presented is by Donna Colby, Toni d'Orr, and Jill Brown and includes handmade books, photographs resembling layers of images and writing on blackboards, and works based on displays in a grid format. New whimsical pieces by Bobbysox Einstein have been added in the Fun & Games Room.

HOURS - Saturdays 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Tuesday to Friday - 12:30 to 5:00

These are adult classes (ages 17 and up). All classes are suitable for both beginners and those with art experience. Materials are provided. No preregistration necessary for any of the scheduled classes.

SATURDAY MORNINGS 10:30 - 12:00
Saturday Creativity Session - $10  (only $5 for Flying Leap Art Club members)
This class will be varied and will often be based on requests from Flying Leap Art Club members. Here are the projects for this month:

October 6 - Working in Jewel Tones - In this class we will begin a series of sessions on color (which actually began with the Earth Tones class a couple of weeks ago). This Saturday we will look at the bright, saturated hues I call Jewel Tones—how they work together, they gain luminosity, and how to create them with different media.

October 13 -  How to Work with Gouache - Continuing our our once-a-month “How To” Saturday, we will focus this week on the use of gouache—a more opaque watercolor paint capable of behaving with the transparency of traditional watercolor or more saturated flat tones or even textured surfaces like that one can acquire with oil or acrylic. We will learn what kinds of paper or other surfaces you can use, what brushes for which effects, etc.

October 20 - Working in Pastel Colors
- In this class, we will look at the color palette of the paler colors known as pastels. These colors generally give a soft, delicate flavor to a work of art, but can also be used in more dramatic pieces. Like the other color classes, we will explore the creation of these colors with a variety of media.

October 27- Working in Highly Contrasting Colors
- This week, we will see what happens when we add deep, rich, darker tones to works of art using the other colors we’ve studied—Earth Tones, Jewel Tones, and Pastels. There are many wonderful ways to employ high tonal contrast in both figurative and abstract works and principles to make the effect work well.

SATURDAY AFTERNOONS 1:30 - 3:00

Self Discovery Collage Workshop   $10  ($8 for Flying Leap Art Club members)
Aimed at self-exploration. Anyone can do it. Each class has a theme and the abundant collage materials are used to work in an art journal, poster board, or any other format.

September 1 - Making Art on Unusual Surfaces - In this class we will use a variety of media to create art pieces on surfaces such as newspaper, antique book pages, fabric, various kinds of cardboard, including postcards and portions of boxes. We will learn how to use Gesso to prepare porous surfaces to make them paintable.

September 8 -  How to Create Shading and Volume with Hatching and Cross-Hatching - This week we will start our once-a-month “How To” Saturday, in which we focus on a particular medium or technique. Hatching and cross-hatching has been used for centuries in pencil and ink drawing to create tone with the use of lines only. We will work with pencil, ink, art markers, colored pencils, and even paint in today’s class.

September 15 - Art with Text - In this class, we will look at the work of artists who have used words and letters within their works of art in various ways. Some used letters as design elements; others made pieces resembling journal pages or illustrated a poem or quote. We will look at these and more, and then make out own pieces involving text.

September 21 - Working in Earth Tones - With the coming of autumn, the color palette outdoors changes from the jewel tones of summer to the earth tones of fall and winter. In this class, we will look at works of art in this more subdued palette and learn how to create these shades and hues with paint and other media.

September 29 - Making a Work of Art with a Border - This week, we will look at different ways artists have incorporated borders into their drawings or paintings themselves (not just matted or framed the work). Some are quite intricate, others simple. We’ll experiment with borders on our own work.

Students create their own works, based on inspiration from the artist studied. Gouache and watercolor are primarily used, but pastels, acrylic, and other media come into play if appropriate, This class is full of wonderful discoveries, as well as naturally developing technique.

Each month or two a particular master artist is the focus:

September - The Landscapes of Giorgio Morandi and Edward Hopper - This month we will look at the landscape work of two painters from the same era at the beginning of the 20th century, one an Italian and one an American, both with similar qualities of simplifying the forms and tones in a landscape to a pure, almost abstract pattern. Both painted familiar places where they lived, both created equally beautiful works with or without buildings, and both were known for a feeling of stillness in their paintings.

TUESDAY CLASS:
1:30 - 3:00
Basic Drawing & Painting   $18 individually or $60 for a 4-class punch card  ($12 a class for Flying Leap Art Club members)
